Video: Man enters active volcano, takes selfie near lava

The daring feat went down in the Marum Crater, located in the Ambrym Volcano in the Southern Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. Ambrym is known for its high volcanic activity — it last erupted on May 23, 2008 and that eruption hasn’t stopped yet.

Enter George Kourounis, the creator of Angry Planet. With Sam Cossman, and guided by Geoff Mackley and Brad Ambrose, the team dropped near the lava lake.

And then Kourounis took a selfie.

With an appropriately epic musical score, the video shows the team’s descent into the volcano. Kourounis gets extremely close to the raging flow of lava and was apparently calm enough to snap a photo on his phone, as seen above.

According to Kourounis’ Twitter, the team scaled down 400 metres to reach the plateau where Kourounis took the picture.
