Air quality advisory: Fraser Valley, Langley warned of bad ozone

The regional district’s advisory notes that areas of eastern Metro Vancouver, Langley and the Fraser Valley are at risk of high-levels of ground-level ozone. The advisory is due to continuing extreme warm temperatures, which are causing the high-concentrations of ozone on the ground.

Warm temperatures result in the rising of ozone levels, harmful to humans. Ground-level ozone is often described as “bad ozone” and is “not emitted directly into the air, but is created by chemical reactions between oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the presence of sunlight. Emissions from industrial facilities and electric utilities, motor vehicle exhaust, gasoline vapors, and chemical solvents are some of the major sources of NOx and VOC.”

The advisory noted that exercise and prolonged time in the sun, in particular during the hotter hours of the afternoon, should be avoided.

The advisory also said that the conditions “are expected to persist through the weekend” and possibly beyond. Young persons, elderly, and those with heart or lung disease are particularly at risk.

“Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during mid-afternoon, when ozone levels are highest,” the advisory reads. “Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as lung or heart disease and asthma.

“If you are experiencing symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, cough or wheeze,” it adds. “Follow the advice of your health care provider and stay indoors in air conditioned spaces.”
