Resident’s images of Sydney’s freak storm show nature’s fury

New South Wales Premier Mike Baird said, “It is clear — the ferocity of this storm was such that the damage has been unbelievable up and down the coast.”

And the damage is extensive as residents begin the task of cleaning up the debris, even as flood warnings remain in place for many of New South Wales’ rivers. Hard hit was the Manly to Shelby walkway on Sydney’s northern beach, where the storm surge eroded away the path, washing away a toilet block.

But nothing tells a story better than the pictures taken by the residents themselves. The southern end of the wier at the Lane Cover River near Fuller’s Bridge overflowed starting on June 4. Jason Argonaut recorded the flooding, saying the water started smelling of sewage, a sure sign that sewer lines were breached.

The image above was taken by a drone and shows the devastation of the northern beaches caused by Sydney’s intense storm over the weekend. Over 1,000 people along the coast had to be evacuated as a 7 to 8 meter (24 to 26 feet) high King tide flooded the coastline.

In the above scene, Maroubra Beach and the surrounding coast were pounded by big waves and surf as the storm unleashed its fury. Massive waves are expected to continue beating the coastline on Monday, according to the Daily Mail.

Police on Monday were still searching for a number of people who may have been swept away by the powerful waves and flood-waters. Massive waves are still expected to smash the state’s coast, with the Bureau of Meteorology saying the foul weather isn’t quite over, yet.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
