The new video shows a giant squid swimming in shallow waters off of the West-side coast of Japan on Christmas Eve. It is a rare example of the squid in action within the ocean. The squids are normally found in areas of the ocean subject to great water pressures.
The 3.7-meter-long (12 foot) squid was discovered under fishing boats at Toyama Bay; it was a fairly small example of the species. The squid was captured on video using a submersible camera by diver Akinobu Kimura. The body of the squid is shown to a vivid, glowing red color.
Kimura told CNN: “My curiosity was way bigger than fear, so I jumped into the water and go close to it. This squid was not damaged and looked lively, spurting ink and trying to entangle his tentacles around me. I guided the squid toward to the ocean, several hundred meters from the area it was found in, and it disappeared into the deep sea.”
Kimura noted that when the suckers of the squid touched him, he did experience some pain due to the force that the animal exerted.
The giant squid (genus Architeuthis) it is a deep-ocean dwelling squid in the family Architeuthidae. The giant squid can grow to a large size. The only known predators of adult giant squid are sperm whales, but pilot whales may also feed on them. Juveniles Giant Squid are preyed on by deep-sea sharks and other fish. Many aspects of the squid remain a mystery to scientists, such as how they reproduce,because they are so rarely observed in their natural habitat.
