article imageIce storm leaves 250,000 Torontonians without power

By Michael Thomas     Dec 22, 2013 in Environment
Toronto - An ice storm described as "catastrophic" by Toronto Hydro has knocked out power for some 250,000 people in Toronto alone, and tens of thousands more in the Greater Toronto Area.
Many of those in Toronto without power are based in the city's mid-town corridor. Toronto Hydro CEO Anthony Haines told CTV that it may take up to 72 hours to fully restore power, mainly because the ice has created slippery road conditions, and the storm knocked down numerous trees which in turn pulled down power lines.
The outages have also created a nightmare for those traveling via subways, buses, streetcars and airplanes. Fallen trees have blocked rails at Victoria Park and Davisville subway stations. As a result, trains are turning back at Victoria Park and Warden stations on the Bloor-Danforth line and between Bloor and Eglinton stations on the Yonge line. Additionally, at the time of writing, there is no streetcar service due to icy power lines.
The Globe & Mail also reports flights have been cancelled at airports in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Fredericton, Saint John, St. John's and Halifax.
Outside Ontario, Hydro Quebec reports about 29,000 customers are without power, according to National Post. New Brunswick's NB Power reports about 3,800 people are currently in the dark.
