Hiking tragedy
The body of the hiker, reportedly named Michael Charles Low, was found at about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Last week he told friends that on Friday morning he was going on a hike to a log cabin in the mountains near Pemberton called the Keith Flavelle Memorial Hut.
Mr. Low’s intentions were to stay in the cabin on Friday night and then hike back down in time to attend a dinner on Saturday night. When he did not arrive at that dinner and could not be reached on his phone friends became worried and contacted the police.
Recovery of body
The Keith Flavelle hut is a 600 square foot cabin near the headwaters of Cerise Creek and is perched on steep mountainous terrain in the midst of a forest. It was built in 1988 to honour the young outdoorsman Keith Flavelle by his brother, other family and his many friends. Mr. Flavelle died in a climbing accident on nearby Mount Logan.
The abode is open for the public to stay in on a first-come, first-served basis and can hold 14 people. Whistler RCMP and rescue officials have not said if Mr. Low made it to the hut and stayed there Friday night, or if he never made it there. Officials were unable to recover his body on Sunday but it will be recovered sometime early Monday.
The B.C. Coroners office has opened an investigation into the death.
