Central California foothills burning again (Includes interview and first-hand account)

Cal Fire reports the Butte Fire at 160 acres as of 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, however that was hours ago and the fire has been moving into some very rugged terrain. The fire began September 9 at 2:26 p.m.

The fire has also now jumped the North Fork of the Mokelumne River and crossed into Calaveras County, moving towards the very small town of Glencoe.

The Butte Fire is visible from as far away as Tuolumne County and very impressive appearing from Jackson in Amador County.

One resident in the area reports local radio is reporting the fire has jumped from 160 acres at 5:40 p.m. to over 1,100 acres as of 8:30 p.m. The temperatures Wednesday were in triple digits Fahrenheit throughout the Central California foothills and humidity levels were extremely low this afternoon as well, and have only climbed as high as 18 percent this evening so far. The forecast is for humidity levels to drop back into the 13 percent range tomorrow afternoon.

Power outages in the Jackson, Ca. area are affecting over 5,700 people in Amador County. There are more than 8,000 without power in Calaveras county between Mokelumne Hill and West Point.

Due to the fire crossing the river into Calaveras county, the Calaveras County Sheriff has set up a contact number for the public to call, 209-754-5527. Evacuations have been ordered in the area of Highway 26 from the Highway 49 junction to Lower Doray Rd. Which is to say from just between San Andreas, Ca and Mokelumne Hill all the way past Glencoe, a stretch of several miles. The area is rural in nature but filled with homes and small ranches.

As well as the Butte fire today, the Oak Fire in Tuolumne county burned 102 acres, including one structure and two out buildings as reported by Cal Fire. The Oak Fire however is now 80 percent contained, due in part to being a flight time of less than two minutes from the Columbia Air Attack Base with and incredibly short turn around time for the fire fighting aircraft.

Update: 9-10-15 0930 hrs.PST
Health officials in Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne counties have advised citizens with respiratory issues to try to remain indoors and use common sense regarding outdoor activities. The particulate levels in the atmosphere are much higher than normal and the skies appear to be overcast. One person this reporter spoke to from Calaveras county stated he couldn’t see across the street on Thursday morning.
