Two Canadians celebrated for climate change campaigning

Earth Month ran between April 22 – May 22 and it was designed to raise awareness about climate change in Canada. Earth Month is focused on promoting the fact that many parts of the world do not have access to fresh and clean water. The event is run by the campaign body Earth Day, which promotes various environmental causes. The group’s mission is to “celebrate environmental respect, action and behavior change that lessens our impact on the Earth.”

Following the events of Earth Month, Earth Day has recognized the contribution made by two Canadian citizens to environmental causes. These are Ochelle Baller and Gilda Berru.

Ochelle Baller was celebrated for embarking on a lifestyle changing “clean commute”; whereas Gilda Berru was the top social media poster, putting forward various ideas for people to reduce their environmental footprint. Both were awarded a $2000 prize pack made up of bicycles, fitness trackers, train passes and athletic leggings.

With the clean commute, Baller undertook various green activities, such as planting, along the routes that her colleagues took to work. Berru used social media to its full potential to promote issue relating to conserving power and minimizing fossil fuels.

Discussing the awards, Deb Doncaster, President of Earth Day Canada explained: “We’re excited to recognize and reward people who make conscientious decisions to reduce their carbon impact using the Earth Day Every Day tool. Congratulations to Gilda, Ochelle and all of our weekly campaign winners. We invite you and all climate-concerned citizens to sign the Earth Flag to further illustrate our collective resolve to reduce climate impacts, and to keep on using EDED.ca to track your carbon reductions!”
