Early Saturday morning, the Confederate flag in front of the South Carolina Statehouse was removed by a 30-year-old woman.
The woman, who was identified as Bree Newsome, climbed the flagpole, which stands at more than 30-feet, in front of the statehouse. Police told her to come down, but she was already halfway up the pole and kept on going. She eventually reached the top and removed the flag before returning to the ground.
Newsome was arrested when she returned to the ground. Another man who entered the wrought-iron fence surrounding the flag was also arrested. Shortly afterwards, the flag was raised again.
The incident was captured on video. The video shows the woman calmly climbing up the flagpole, with the man standing below, and officers can be heard commanding her to get down. As she makes her way down, she promises the officers that she will comply with their orders and she tells them she is prepared to get arrested.
Newsome and the man, another activist by the name of James Tyson, were charged with defacing a monument and they were taken to jail. A group of onlookers were also present at the scene and when Newsome removed the flag, they broke out in cheers.
