Woman runs over husband because he didn’t vote, gets 3.5 years

Election results anger wife

Daniel Solomon, 36, survived but was badly hurt after making the mistake of telling his wife Holly Nicole Solomon, 31, that he hadn’t gotten around to voting in the Nov. 6 election. On the night in question, in Gilbert, a suburb of Phoenix, witnesses said while the two were in a parking lot they started openly quarreling.

Holly was not happy about his failure to do his civic duty and their argument escalated and before long she decided to get into the SUV, lock Daniel out, and drive around chasing him. While she did this she was reportedly screaming about his failure to register a vote.

Her husband did his best to evade her and at one point was said to be hiding behind a light pole. He may wish he’d stayed put because upon trying to flee, she struck him with the vehicle, knocking him down and breaking his pelvis. He was lucky not to have been killed.

Wife sentenced to jail

She insisted at her trial in April that she was only trying to scare him, not to run him over, but that her foot slipped on the accelerator; she was found guilty all the same and given three-and-a-half years, to be followed by four years of probation. She actually pleaded guilty, doing so to avoid the prospect of a longer sentence.

Holly did it because she felt the family’s finances would be ruined if President Barack Obama was re-elected and given he was and Daniel hadn’t voted, she blamed him. The entire episode was rather pointless as, despite Obama’s win, Arizona’s 11 electoral votes went to the Republican candidate, Mitt Romney; so Daniel’s vote would have been redundant.

And finally, it wasn’t their family finances in ruin after the election — it was the family itself. That’s because, not surprisingly, the two have since divorced.
