Jody Herring has been charged in the alleged shooting death of Lara Sobel after the victim was shot and killed Friday while leaving a Vermont Department for Children and Families office building in Barre.
Authorities describe the murder weapon as a, “fairly highly caliber hunting rifle.”
A rifle and a scope reportedly were found near where the shooting took place, according to police.
Ms. Herring lost custody of her daughter July 10, and the girl reportedly remains in state custody.
Ms. Herring is lodged on a charge of first-degree murder, and is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday.
Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin called the death “shocking and heartbreaking.”
This case grows more mysterious by the day. Saturday, three women that authorities have described as relatives of the suspect in Friday’s shooting were found dead at the family’s farmhouse in rural Vermont.
The deceased have been identified as Rhonda and Regina Herring, sisters in their 40s, and their mother, Julie Ann Folzorano, reportedly in her 70s.
The sisters have been described as cousins of Ms. Herring, the suspect in Friday’s shooting.
Authorities have only said there exists a possible link between the killings, but have as yet declined additional details, including when the three woman may have been killed inside the home.
