Chicago - A Chicago family's trip to the mall ended tragically when Miata Phelan allegedly stabbed her boyfriend to death because he bought presents for others but not for her.
On Wednesday, Phelan went to a Chicago mall with her boyfriend, Larry Martin, Martin's son, eight-year-old Lavelle, and Martin's 25-year-old cousin.
At the shopping centre, Martin, 28, bought gifts for his son and his cousin but did not buy anything for Phelan who was to turn 25 the next day. The woman, who is seven months pregnant with Martin's child, became enraged.
According to prosecutors, Phelan began attacking Martin while he was driving home and almost caused an accident. When Martin stopped to do an errand, she allegedly kicked and scratched him, and took off with the car, leaving the three to walk home.
When the three arrived home, Phelan was still enraged and initially would not let Martin, his son and his cousin in. When she finally unlocked the door and let them in, Phelan allegedly stabbed Martin in the side.
After she stabbed him, Phelan allegedly screamed, "This is what you get for messing with me. I hope you die motherf****r."
Martin's cousin put pressure on the wound but Martin collapsed outside on the sidewalk. He was taken to the Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Phelan has been charged with first-degree murder.
The alleged stabbing took place in front of the eight-year-old. The next day, Lavelle said, "His last words was to me. He said, 'I'm going to die but I love you.'"
Assistant Public Defender Lisa Brean told the court Phelan is a student at Columbia College in Chicago. She is eight classes short of obtaining a bachelor's degree in public relations.
According to Phelan's sister, Arnesia Phelan, Phelan had been physically abused by Martin but she had only found that out recently. Phelan's sister also said none of her family had ever met the 28-year-old.
Phelan appeared in court on Friday and was held in custody in lieu of $1 million bail.
