Liberty - A West Virginia man has been arrested and accused of impregnating the 13-year-old autistic daughter of a couple who took him into their home and entrusted him to be the girl's mentor.
WSAZ reports 28-year-old Justin Matthew Vance of Liberty, Putnam County, is behind bars, accused of sexually abusing the mentally disabled teen who he met while volunteering at the Special Olympics.
Parents Wendell and Geneva Rose welcomed Vance into their home, letting him sleep on their couch in exchange for helping the family out with home projects and mentoring his alleged victim. The girl told investigators she and Vance had slept together on the couch and had kissed and had sex after a doctor explained to her that it was the only way she could get pregnant. The alleged illicit sex occurred while the girl's parents were sleeping in another room.
"We never thought this would happen," Wendell told WSAZ.
"You try to be a nice person or try to do the right thing, and it always backfires on you," added Geneva.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports police began investigating Vance last September after receiving a complaint that the girl was "engaged in an inappropriate relationship with the defendant."
WCHS reports Vance is being held in the Western Regional Jail on $250,000 bail.
