Watch woman jump on hood of her SUV, prevent carjacking

Melissa Smith, 28, was putting gas in her SUV at a Milwaukee gas station around 2 p.m. Tuesday. As she was at the pump putting the nozzle back, a black Cadillac pulls up and stops right near her SUV. A passenger jumps out, enters her car and prepares to drive off. But Smith was not going to let him steal her car.

The 28-year-old ran over to the car, jumped on the hood and began hitting the windshield and grabbing the windshield wipers. While she is doing this, the thief turns the windshield wipers on. The driver then slams on the brakes twice in an apparent attempt to shake her off. But she managed to hang on.

Finally, the thief grabs her purse and runs back to the black Cadillac that then pulls away. He left Smith’s car in gear that is rolling towards the street. Smith gave up any hope she had of going after her purse, jumped into her SUV and managed to stop the vehicle before hit a lamppost or collided with another vehicle on the road.

Smith told DailyMail.com, her first thought was “This isn’t happening to me today.” She did not consider the possibility she might have been hurt. When the thief left the SUV with her purse, she thought about going after him but realized she had to stop her vehicle before it struck something out in the street

Smith told Fox 6 in Milwaukee, she was running on pure adrenaline. She said, “They laughed at me. The kid in my car laughed at me while I was on my car and tried moving and throwing me off, and I screamed bloody murder and I didn’t get off.”

In an interview with CNN, Brooke Baldwin asked the woman if she was crazy. Smith replied, “Apparently a little.” She said she could not go to the side of her car because she could have been dragged. She figured if she jumped on the hood of the car, the driver could not ignore her.

Smith later told her fiancé about what happened. After he saw the video, Smith said, he was glad she was safe but was not thrilled about what what she did.

Police have not yet made any arrests. They did confirm the Cadillac the thief arrived in was stolen.
