Video shows cop repeatedly punching handcuffed woman

On Wednesday, officers were called to the Scores Gentlemen’s Club in Jacksonville, Florida around 5 p.m. It was Mayra Martinez’ first day working at the club and according to a fellow employee she planned to quit. The employee noted the woman had had four 100-proof shots of liquor, was drunk, and refused to leave the establishment.

When officers arrived the 31-year-old woman still refused to leave and became belligerent with them. She tried to bite and kick the officers and was then arrested and charged with trespassing and resisting police. She was transported to the Duval County Jail.

The security video within the jail shows the handcuffed Martinez walking around when she is grabbed by one of the officers present. She is pushed against a wall and while the officer begins to walk away, she begins kicking at him. He then goes back and punches her several times in the stomach. She slowly sinks to the floor.

Akinyemi Borisade, 26, a probationary officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has been fired and charged with simple battery, a misdemeanor. He had been with the sheriff’s office since March 2015 and had the status of a probationary police officer.

The other officers seen in the video as just standing around while the alleged assault happened were not charged. Christian Hancock of the JSO said, “Witnessing a crime does not constitute a crime.” The video shows another handcuffed prisoner in the area and he would have been left alone had other officers rushed over.

Corrections officers at the jail reported the alleged battery and it was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Undersheriff Pat Ivey said the officer could have turned her around and taken her to another area as he was trained to do. In Ivy’s view, there was no need to hit her.

In addition to firing and charging Borisade, the sheriff’s office made the decision to release the video to the public.

The Florida Times-Union obtained a dashcam video of what transpired at the strip bar. That video shows Borisade and another officer on top of Martinez striking her. Borisade is shown shoving Martinez’ face into the concrete. The dashcam video can be seen here.

First Coast News reports the battery charge was not Borisade’s first brush with the law. In 2008 he was charged with petit theft and three years later he was alleged to have smashed the rear window of a woman’s car. Both these incidents were misdemeanors and did not disqualify Borisade from becoming a police officer.

Martinez was taken to hospital to be checked out and was later released from custody.
