Caracas - The actress and former Miss Venezuela Mónica Spear and her ex-husband were shot dead by criminals while they were stranded on a highway on Monday night. The daughter of the couple was injured but is in stable condition.
Spear, 29, and her former husband Henry Thomas Berry, 39, British-born but a Venezuelan national, were killed when they tried to resist an attack on the highway linking Puerto Cabello, the largest and busiest port in the country, with the central city of Valencia, about 170 kilometers west of Caracas. The bodies were found late Monday evening inside their vehicle.
Their five-year-old daughter suffered a leg injury in the incident; Spear Maya Berry was transferred to a hospital where she received medical attention and remains in a stable condition.
According to local media, the former couple, who maintained a good relationship, was waiting for a tow truck because the vehicle they were traveling broke down when hitting a hard object that had been placed on the road.
According to UltimasNoticias (in Spanish) today the National Guard and forensic police detained six persons, including two women, identified as members of a ruthless gang of highway robbers known as “Los Rapiditos” (The quick ones). They are being charged as responsible for the attack and killing of Spear and Berry.
Mónica Spear was crowned Miss Venezuela in 2004, and in 2005 she was among the five finalists in the Miss Universe beauty contest. The actress began her acting career in Venezuelan soap-operas and currently was living in Miami and performing as soap-opera actress for Telemundo, a leading Spanish-language network in the United States.
The Venezuelan Violence Observatory (OVV) said in a 2013 report that the murder rate in Venezuela had risen to 79 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which would place Venezuela as the world's second most dangerous country not in a war, only surpassed by Honduras.
By contrast, the Venezuelan Interior Minister, Miguel Rodríguez, reported at year end (2013) that the homicide rate in 2013 was 39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down 30 percent from the previous year.
