Mother of one charged
Stephanie McCrea, a 35-year-old mother of one, was taken into custody on Jan. 27 and has been charged with four counts of third-degree child rape and four counts of first-degree sexual misconduct, along with tampering with a witness.
She pleaded not guilty to all charges in a Vancouver courtroom today.
McCrea, a drama and English teacher at Evergreen High in Vancouver, is accused of having sex with the teenage boy at her home and at the school. The court learned today that she separated from her husband in December and recently attempted suicide.
A teacher at the school since 2006, McCrea was described as passionate about theater and directed a number of student productions. A letter sent to parents by the school said they do not believe there are any other accusations of Ms. McCrea having sex with a student. She is currently released on $40,000 bail.
Female teachers charged with sex offences
There have been other recent instances of female teachers in the U.S. being accused of sex with teenage boys. However, the boys in question were either their students or students at the school where they taught.
In December, a 32-year-old teacher from Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Mary F. McCormick, began a court case on charges of having sex with a 13-year-old student. She’s alleged to have had images of their genitalia on both her phone and computer and to have had sexual intercourse with the boy in her home.
In January, Jessica Bonnett Acker, 23, who taught at the Bryant High School in Cottondale, Alabama, was charged with having sex with an 18-year-old male student at her school. She is charged with engaging in a sex act and deviant sexual intercourse with a student under 19.
Unless there is an out of court settlement, Ms. McCrea’s trial is set to begin on May 28.
