Shots fired downtown
Toronto Police Services received a call at around 2:30 about a shooting in the downtown area at Yonge and Charles Streets. Officers attended, quickly and at the nearby intersection of Yonge and Gerrard Streets they saw a speeding vehicle crash into a building.
In that vehicle, a newer-model black sedan, were two persons, one of whom, the driver, was shot multiple times. Police believe the man was shot while driving and tried to flee the scene only to succumb to his injuries and crash the car. He was rushed to St. Michael’s hospital where he died.
The passenger was neither hurt in the shooting nor the subsequent crash. Police said the dead man, 25, was known to them but while they believe the victim was targeted they do not believe it was gang-related.
The victim began the evening at a nearby nightclub but police do not yet know if there was an altercation there involving him.
