Toddler found in recycling bin on cold New Year’s Day is okay

Toddler sustains injuries in fall

Winnipeg police say that the 22-month-old girl was taken by a 17-year-old boy, neither have been identified due to their age, from a home he was partying in, in the north end of the city. It’s unclear of the relationship between the 17-year-old male and the toddler.

The boy is said to have argued with another guest at the home and chased this other guest outside into the cold, carrying the toddler. She was not, Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Eric Hofley said, “adequately dressed for the weather.” Temperatures there are averaging between -14 and -24 degrees Celsius.

When this other person ran off, the 17-year-old fell, injuring the child badly. CBC News reports that the boy’s alleged response was to put her into a nearby recycling bin; due to her injuries and the height of the bin, she could not get out. Meanwhile, the boy went back into the party and did not tell anyone what he had done.

Toddler rescued from recycling bin

Not long afterwards, the person he had chased off returned to the scene and heard the cries of the toddler, finding her in the recycling bin and immediately removing her and calling 911. Police and paramedics arrived on scene and she was transported to the hospital.

Police said her injuries were life-threatening but that she has since been upgraded to stable and the little girl is no longer in danger.

“You have family, you have friends, you’re enjoying a good time and then something like this, you know beyond comprehension certainly,” Const. Hofley said. “I think we’ve all hosted parties and had children present, would never in a million years could believe something like this could ever occur.”

The 17-year-old boy has been charged with abandoning a child, assault, assault causing bodily harm by negligence and with possession or consumption of liquor by a minor.
