Birmingham - Three people were killed Tuesday morning, including the suspected gunman, in a shooting incident at a warehouse next to the UPS offices at 4601 Inglenook Lane, Birmingham, Alabama.
Police said the shooting at the company's warehouse facility in the Inglenook neighborhood of Birmingham appeared to be confined to UPS employees only. Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper told reporters "We have no information regarding the motivation. We have a pretty good idea about what transpired."
When police entered the building, they found three people dead, including the shooter. According to Roper, the alleged shooter was an employee with United Parcel Service who had been fired yesterday, but he has to confirm that information.
According to Fox News, Roper said the alleged shooter, wearing a UPS uniform, started his shooting spree either in or near some offices in the warehouse. The facility is located in an industrial area north of the Birmingham airport. The alleged shooter had apparently took his own life before police arrived on the scene.
Police transported employees to the Boutwell auditorium so they could be questioned as well as receive counseling if needed. "It is extremely troubling for the city, for the families involved. When they came to work today they had no idea it would be their last day alive on earth," Roper said. "They were just people working at their jobs."
St. Claire county officials briefly put the Springville elementary and middle schools on lock-down this morning. School officials said there was a connection between a "person involved in the shooting" and a child at one of the schools. "It was just a precaution in case he was still at large," said Phillip Johnson, facilities manager for the county school system.
Atlanta, Georgia-based UPS issued a brief statement saying the shooting occurred around 9:45 a.m. UPS added they are fully cooperating with authorities in this incident.
