Houston - A Harris County man shot and killed one of three home invaders early Friday morning while his mother was trying to make breakfast.
Around 4:30 a.m, the man's mother was in the kitchen with her three grandchildren, when the shooter heard, "please don't hurt the girls." The unidentified man heard the plea from his bedroom and sprung into action. According to deputies the man grabbed his gun and killed one of three suspects.
Investigators did not release any information regarding the identities of the two suspects who fled the scene, but said one of them was heard speaking Spanish as they entered the home.
The family of eight, who were unarmed in the incident told investigators they own a construction business and were not victims of a home invasion before Friday.
This case in the Hockley area of Harris County is similar to another home invasion that took place in the same county last August. Two people tried to break into an apartment in the east side of the county and were shot at by the resident with one being shot. In southeast Houston last April, a 20-year-old man was shot twice in the abdomen after kicking in the front door of a house where a man and his wife lived. The intruder was shot by the husband and died later in hospital.
According to one website, Houston ranks 91st in the 100 most dangerous cities to live in America. With one in 17 residents falling victim to violent or property crime, " Houston has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes," but crime is going down.
City of Houston crime statistics show a nearly 4% decrease in burglary from 2007-2009 to current data from 2010-2012.
The two suspects in the Harris County home invasion remain at large.
