St Louis - A cell phone video has emerged showing St. Louis police allegedly shooting an African American male in broad daylight after he stole two sodas from a local store.
The incident occurred August 19 only four miles from where Michael Brown was shot. The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Kajieme Powell.
The video was uploaded to YouTube on August 20. The video shows Powell pacing along a sidewalk with two cans of soda on the ground in front of him. According to the Sam Dotson, the St. Louis chief of police, the sodas had been stolen from a local convenience store.
The video then shows a white police SUV pull up and two officers exit the vehicle with guns drawn. Powell approaches the officers while shouting, "Kill me! Shoot me!"
Powell gets closer to the car and after several moments, the officers open fire. Nine shots can be heard on the video. After Powell falls to the ground, the officers roll him onto his back and place handcuffs on him.
In the video it is not clear whether Powell was armed, but reports filed by the police department say that Powell "brandished a knife."
USA Today reports that Powell attempted to walk out of the convenience store with the drinks and some doughnuts, but after being confronted by the proprietor of the store, Powell threw down the doughnuts but left with the drinks.
Aaron Morris, a witness, told USA Today that Powell was mentally challenged and believed shooting him was excessive.
