article imageSouth Carolina woman jailed after failing to return rental video

By Arthur Weinreb     Feb 16, 2014 in Crime
Pickens - A 19-year-old woman rented a VHS videotape of a movie for a period of 72 hours back in 2005. According to police, she never returned it and the law caught up to her this week, requiring her to spend a night in jail.
On Thursday, 27-year-old Kayla Michelle Finley went to the Pickens County Sheriff's Office to report an undisclosed crime. During the course of her interview about the crime, deputies discovered a warrant had been issued for the young woman's arrest and Finley spent Thursday night in the Pickens County Jail.
According to Deputy Creed Hashe, Finley, then 18, had gone to Dalton's Video in 2005 and rented a VHS copy of the movie Monster-in-Law starring Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda. She rented the movie for a period of 72 hours but failed to return it. The owner of the store claims several letters were sent to Finley, but she neither responded nor returned the video.
P.J. Dalton then went before a magistrate and a warrant was issued for Finley's arrest on a charge of petty larceny, a misdemeanor charge involving property valued at less than $1,000.
According to court records, a certified copy of the warrant was sent to Finley on Sept. 12, 2005.
After spending Thursday night behind bars, Finley was taken to court on Friday and was released on a personal recognizance bond in the amount of $2,000. Finley is not a happy camper. The woman told Fox News, "It's obvious Pickens County has nothing better to do. I fully intend on fighting this, it's ridiculous I had this happen to me."
A person purporting to be Finley wrote on Fox Carolina's Facebook page, "I'm no criminal but pickens county sheriffs office sure made me feel like i was."
Dalton's Video has been closed for a long time and no one rents VHS tapes any more. But according to deputies, while businesses come and go, warrants last forever and they had no choice but to charge Finley and jail her for the night.
The Hollywood Reporter notes the incident gives Finley more reason to dislike Monster-in-Law than the critics who panned it when it was released.
