Shooting at Fort Bliss
The shooting, at a Health Clinic that is a part of the Williams Beaumont Army Medical Center, happened at about 3:10 p.m. El Paso time. Officials held a news conference in the evening Tuesday but did not say if the gunman shot himself or was shot by a military policeman or someone at the scene.
“The alleged shooter is dead, and we have one casualty. That casualty is deceased. All other VA patients and staff are safe,” Fort Bliss Maj. Gen. Stephen M. Twitty said at the news conference. “Everything is under control and there is no immediate threat to Fort Bliss or the local community.
“I want to thank El Paso and federal law enforcement agencies for their quick response in securing the clinic and also assisting our military personnel in clearing the clinic,” he added.
Shooting victim, gunman unnamed
The El Paso Times wrote late today that the victim was a doctor and that the gunman took his own life.
The FBI is conducting the investigation and say they have hundreds of witnesses to interview. Neither the name of the victim or the gunman will be released until next of kin have been notified, the FBI said.
The focus now is on helping patients who need the services of the facility.
“Those people were here seeking medical assistance, so we understand the difficulties that this situation presents to them and we’re trying to expeditiously get through those hundreds of witnesses to find out details about this incident,” Douglas Lindquist of the local FBI office said.
The clinic the shooting took place at will be closed Wednesday.
