Beer Brake: Driver of Semi hauling beer in Canada busted for DUI

Drunk driver hauling beer

It happened near Vancouver March 9 when the Semi-Trailer was first spotted by a citizen in Langley on Highway 1, swerving and “driving erratically.” From what they were told the RCMP believed that the driver was impaired but initially were unable to locate the truck.

Soon afterwards, at about 4 p.m., they got another call about a Semi-Trailer, same description, and this time officers located him, still heading eastbound on Highway 1 in Abbotsford. They pulled the truck over without incident. Inside was the male driver and a passenger, a woman.

“Upon demand, the driver provided a roadside sample of his breath which resulted in a “fail,” an RCMP press release said. “The driver was served an Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) for 90 days and the Semi-Truck tractor was impounded for 30 days.”

RCMP: Driving impaired “serious matter”

While some online commenters have indeed found the irony of it somewhat amusing, the RCMP reminded us that driving drunk isn’t anything but dangerous, foolish and selfish.

“Although this story has an element of humour and irony, this is a reminder that impaired driving is a serious matter,” RCMP Corporal Ronda Rempel said. “Operating any vehicle, in this case, a truck with a loaded trailer, while impaired is extremely dangerous and can have devastating outcomes.”

The truck was towed “full of beer” to an impound yard and the owner was “advised where the beer could be picked up.” Meanwhile the driver and his passenger were released and called a cab to take them to Chilliwack. That driver not only lost his truck but he also may have lost his job.

His name has not been released.
