“The suspect who shot two RCMP officers earlier this morning in a St. Albert casino has been located,” the RCMP said in a statement. “There is no longer any public safety threat related to this incident.”
After first reporting he was “located” the RCMP announced the suspect was tracked to a home and found dead inside. “At no time during these efforts to arrest the suspect at that residence did officers speak to the suspect or fire their weapons,” RCMP Asst. Comm. Martin Degrand said.
The incident occurred at a St. Albert lounge that is part of a casino near the Sturgeon Valley Golf and Country Club. Reports say the two officers were on a call concerning a stolen vehicle. Degrand said the lounge was still open when the officers arrived so they went inside. They were shot inside and Degrand said that they do not believe the officers were able to return fire.
They did not say how many shots were fired at the officers. Before he was found deceased, RCMP had issued a warning that the suspect was armed and dangerous and said local residents should stay indoors.
The stolen vehicle has been recovered, Degrand said.
They did not release the name of the deceased suspect but said he was known to them. The names of the officers are Aux. Const. Derek Walter Bond, 49, and Const. David Matthew Wynn, 42. Const. Bond has been released while Const. Wynn continues to fight for his life and ad of Sunday morning RCMP said his condition had not changed.
