Pleasant Grove - Police in Pleasant Grove, Utah have released more information on the case of Megan Huntsman who has been charged with murdering six of her newborn children over a period of 10 years, including her motive for killing them.
Yesterday, Capt. Mike Roberts of the Pleasant Grove Police Department provided the motive for the strangulation or suffocation deaths of six of the seven newborns discovered in the garage of a home Huntsman used to live in. Roberts told AP the 39-year-old was heavily addicted to meth during the 10 year period she is alleged to have killed her babies. During part of this time, she also drank heavily.
Roberts said she was not concerned about the babies having health problems stemming from her drug and alcohol use. He said, "It was completely selfish. She was high on drugs and didn't want the babies or the responsibility. That was her priority at the time."
As Digital Journal previously reported, Huntsman was charged in April 2014 with six counts of first-degree felony murder. It is alleged she killed six newborn infants shortly after they were born between 1996 and 2006.
Huntsman's ex-husband, Darren West, was released from prison in January after serving a drug sentence. He went to his parents' home where he and Huntsman had lived and was cleaning out the garage when he discovered the decomposed body of an infant. It was wrapped in a bag that was placed a box, sealed with tape.
Police obtained a search warrant and found the bodies of six more full term infants in the garage, all wrapped in bags or towels and then placed into boxes. During the search, police also recovered bloodied gloves and women's underwear in the garage. Baby clothes were found in the master bedroom.
Huntsman allegedly admitted killing six of the newborns while saying the seventh was stillborn. Police accepted the fact one of the babies was stillborn and charged her only in the death of six. Neighbours and the couples' older children said they never knew Huntsman was pregnant although her weight fluctuated.
Roberts also said the results of DNA testing have been obtained. The testing had to be sent to the FBI as facilities in Utah were not able to test the remains of the newborns because of their size and the advanced stage of decomposition.
DNA tests revealed West was the father of all seven of the babies. Although he did not go to prison until January 2006, he is not considered a suspect in the deaths of the newborns who were strangled or smothered shortly after their birth.
Of the seven babies, five were girls and two were boys.
Huntsman remains in the Utah County Jail. Bail has been set at $6 million cash.
