Melbourne - Police in Melbourne arrested a man who they say tried to rob people during a sermon, but was stopped by the church pastor.
The pastor stopped the man, John Grace, in his tracks by tackling him. Police arrested Grace, who now faces an armed robbery charge, as well as 20 additional charges. The incident took place Sunday morning at The Door Christian Fellowship church.
Les Snodgrass, the pastor, said that in the past Grace attended his services, but not on a regular basis. Snodgrass said that from out of nowhere Grace stood up and produced a gun. The pastor continued to say that Grace pointed it right at his (snodgrass) mother's head. Grace told people to get on the ground and to hand over their money to him.
Snodgrass said that he tried to distract Grace and kept calling out to him, while slowly approaching him. Once he got close enough to Grace, he tackled him and got him to the ground. As soon as Grace was taken down to the ground, Snodgrass's son jumped into action and pounced onto Grace. The pastor's wife produced a stun gun and pointed it at Grace until the cops arrive.
After the incident, which was captured by the church's audio system, Snodgrass gathered his family and they prayed. He added that they forgave him on the spot, but said that Grace should still face justice.
Grace appeared in court on Monday and is currently in jail on a $70,000 bond.
