Ohio woman allegedly beheads her three-month-old daughter

Police responded to the 5900 block of Waldway Lane in the Cincinnati area of hamilton County, Ohio at about 6 a.m. for a report of a deceased infant. Deasia Watkins, 20 years old, was taken into custody after the body of the three-month-old girl was discovered in the family’s home Monday morning. She’s charged with aggravated murder.

Hamilton County coroner Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco said an early investigation showed the baby had suffered “multiple traumas.” The coroner also said on Monday if remains unclear if Watkins acted alone in the murder of the child. “It’s days like this when you really wonder how much evil there is in the world and how we’re fighting it,” Sammarco told ABC2 News. “We’re trying to do right by this child. We’re trying to bring justice for this baby.”

“There were multiple stab wounds to the right side of the (baby’s) face and head,” Dr. Sammarco said. “(The baby had) a fractured right arm… and the head was severed from the body.” The coroner added, “It was a pretty horrific sight.”

Sources told WCPO Cincinnati that documents show the College Hill woman accused of beheading her baby was suffering from “post-partum psychosis” and was “speaking with demons.” Watkins is not listed on the Hamilton County, Ohio jail roster. She has apparently been taken for a mental health evaluation. It is reported that the mother has been suffering from a mental illness and had reportedly been told to stay away from the baby, according to the Associated Press.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
