article imageMother who gave daughter 'abortion pill' sentenced to prison

A mother in Pennsylvania has been sentenced to up to 18 months in prison for obtaining 'abortion pills' online and giving them to her teen daughter to end her pregnancy.
According to Raw Story, Jennifer Whalen, 39, a single mother, pleaded guilty in August to obtaining abortion pills from a European website. She gave the pills to her 16-year-old daughter because she did not want to have the child.
Whalen said that she couldn't find a clinic to perform an abortion and her daughter didn't have insurance to pay to stay at a hospital, according to ABC. The closest abortion clinic was almost 75 miles away.
Whalen violated a state law that requires physicians to perform abortions.
Whalen will also pay a fine of $1,000 and after she is released from prison she will need to do 40 hours of community service.
After taking the pills, Whalen's daughter started to experience severe cramping and bleeding. She took her daughter to the hospital, where she received treatment. Whalen's lawyer said that Whalen understands that she made a poor decision.
Whalen's case follows the case of a Florida man who was prosecuted after he pleaded guilty to tricking his girlfriend into taking an abortion pill. He was sentenced earlier this year to 13 years in prison, and he was ordered to pay more than $28,000 in restitution.
