Mom arrested for allegedly ‘whipping’ sons who committed burglary

Schaquana Spears, a mother of six, was arrested after it was alleged she whipped three of her sons after they allegedly burglarized a house down the street from their home. According to the probable cause report, deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Department of Children and Family Services on June 17.

On that day, deputies went to the home and noted Spears’ 13-year-old son had marks on his leg, back, stomach and shoulder. Her 10-year-old had a scratch on his hand while a third son had a cut on his arm.

According to police, Spears admitted she had hit them with a cord while they were moving around after she caught them at home with what appeared to be stolen goods taken from a house down the street. Spears spent about 24 hours in custody before being released on a $2,500 bond, put up by a good Samaritan.

Spears’ six children, ages two to 13, were taken out of the home by the Department of Children and Family Services.

On Wednesday, Spears gave a tearful interview to WBRZ, the local ABC affiliate. Spears works as a chef for a catering company and was working right around the corner from her home when she received a call from a neighbour. The neighbour said three of her sons and some others boys were going into her house carrying bags of items and it looked like the bags contained stolen goods. Spears said reached home in about three minutes and caught them as they were throwing the stuff out of the window. She then said she grabbed a belt and “whipped” her three sons as they were running around.

Spears explained she had grown up in New Orleans and had seen a lot of kids end up in jail. She said her children are her life and everything she does, she does for them. They all attend good schools and are on the honour role. Her children’s father is currently incarcerated and she does not want her children going down that road.

Spears lamented that she is now the bad guy and all she was trying to do was prevent her children from getting into trouble.

On Thursday, the day after the interview, WBRZ reported dozens of people contacted the station showing their support for Spears. The mom was given the emails that were sent to the station.

When asked on Thursday whether she would do the same thing again, Spears said “yes.” She said single mothers have to discipline their children, especially boys, or else lose them. She added she was not blaming the state or the deputies that arrested her.

After the initial interview that went viral, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry became involved. On Friday he said the state’s Department of Justice will be looking into the case because the state has potential liability in the matter. Landry said officials will be seeking a meeting with Spears’ attorneys and he also wants the Department of Children and Family Services to justify the removal of the six children.

Landry added it is necessary for children to learn right from wrong and praised his own mother for not sparing the rod.

Spears’ arrest has triggered a debate about the mom’s arrest and the difference between discipline and child abuse.
