Miami - It is alleged that, not only did the mother leave her six-year-old daughter alone in their apartment, but she also knew there was a fire and did not do anything to try and help the little girl.
The fire broke out around 8 p.m. Thursday. Grace Rosello, 6, was alone in the apartment although her mother was not far away. According to an arrest report, a neighbour saw the child's mother, Erica Rosello,32, in the hallway of the apartment complex. The witness also noticed smoke coming from her apartment.
Rosello allegedly denied there was a fire in her apartment but admitted her six-year-old was in the unit alone. She made no attempt to get into the apartment to rescue her daughter although the witness made an unsuccessful attempt to get in. After he was unable to get in, he pulled the fire alarm and called 911.
When members of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived, firefighter David Arencibia asked his partner to get down on one knee. Using his partner's leg as support he able to reach the window, Arencibia was then able to grab Grace, bring her out and then hand her to his partner. Arencibia said, "When I picked her up, she started moaning which was a good thing."
The modest Arencibia said if he is a hero so are all the members of the Miami-Date Fire Rescue and firefighters throughout America.
The little girl was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Although she is expected to be okay, Arencibia said if it had been another three minutes she likely would have died.
As soon as Grace was pulled out of the apartment, Rosello took off. It is alleged she was supposed to be looking after Grace when the fire occurred. Rosello later called her mother to find out how her daughter was and the mother persuaded her to go to the hospital and cooperate with the authorities. After she arrived at the hospital, she was arrested by Miami-Dade police.
Rosello is facing a charge of child neglect causing great bodily harm. Local 10 reports she had previously been charged with child neglect as well as a DUI.
Rosello was being held on a $7,500 bond and Grace was placed in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families. A custody hearing is scheduled for today.
The fire remains under investigation.
