Memphis mom charged with murder after body of 7-week-old found

By Arthur Weinreb     Feb 18, 2014 in Crime
Memphis - After the body of an infant found in a ditch over the weekend was determined to be seven-week-old Aniston Walker, the girl's mother has been charged with killing her.
A motorcyclist discovered the baby's body in a ditch in Millington, Tennessee around noon on Sunday. Millington Police Chief Rita Stanback said, "I would say that the body has been there for some time. It's less than a year old, wearing a onesie."
After the discovery of the body, Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said the clothing on the body matched what authorities were told the baby was wearing the last time she was seen. Armstrong said, "It is heartbreaking to confirm that an innocent child's life has been taken, but now family members of Aniston Walker can have closure and begin the healing process of losing a loved one."
Yesterday, Andrea Walker, 33, accompanied by her lawyer, surrendered to Memphis police. She was charged with one count first-degree murder in the perpetration of a felony to wit aggravated child neglect or endangerment and one count of first-degree murder in the perpetration of a felony to wit aggravated child abuse.
The exact cause of the infant's death has not been released.
On Jan. 9, Andrea Walker reported the seven-week-old Aniston missing. Walker told police she left the seven-week-old alone at home with her three-year-old while she took her five-year-old to school. When she returned home, the baby was not there.
According to police, after Walker arrived home, she called Aniston's father who did not live with her and he reported the child missing. She then went out for about an hour, leaving the three-year-old alone in the house.
Police could find no evidence of forced entry and the following day, Walker was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse. She was released from custody on Feb. 5 after posting a $250,000 bond.
After the baby was reported missing, a search was undertaken by the Memphis Police Department, covering the area surrounding Walker's home. The search was called off after three days because nothing was found and police believed there were no other relevant places to look that had not been searched.
Police suspected from the beginning that Walker was responsible for her daughter's disappearance.
