Man with pocketknife shot dead by police in Hollywood was white

By Marcus Hondro     Dec 6, 2014 in Crime
A white man carrying only a small pocketknife was shot and killed in Hollywood Friday night by L.A. police. Reports said he was a homeless man but his race was not being reported in most media. Witnesses said he was shot by more than one officer.
Assault with a deadly weapon
Police say they responded to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon at 7. p.m. Friday night, though they gave no details of an assault. The man stood in the intersection at Highland Ave. and Hollywood Boul. near the Walk of Fame with a pocketknife. The man did not appear to be threatening anyone with the pocketknife, witnesses said, when the police confronted him.
However, a witness said that the man did not comply with police orders to drop the knife, orders they gave moments before he was shot. He was said to have reached both hands into his pockets when shot, though he may have been putting the pocketknife in his pocket. He had no other weapon.
One witness said four or five shots rang out, while others said as many as ten shots were fired at the man. After he was shot police cautiously moved in as he lay prone and unmoving on the pavement. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead at about 9:30 p.m.
β€œI can say that when they told him to get down and comply, that he did not at all,” witness Henry Hodge told L.A,. Channel 2 News. β€œHe had his hands inside his pocket when they ran up to him.”
Another witness took to twitter and wrote "Police just shot a man in the head 10 times for no reason right in front of me holy fuck."
A man on the scene said the dead man was his friend and that he routinely waved his small pocketknife to scare tourists, but that he did not attack anyone. Police have not released details of the man or their investigation so far.
A photo of a small Swiss army style pocketknife was released by police. Meanwhile, witnesses posted pictures of the man lying on the pavement before police moved in on him, either wounded or already dead.
Protests over Brown, Garner shootings
Numerous media who reported on the shooting of the man did not report he was white, though the New York Times did. The Huffington Post, NBC Southern California and Hip Hop Wired are examples of media who reported on the shooting but not the race of the dead man.
That is in contrast to the reporting of two black men killed by police, Michael Brown in Ferguson and Eric Garner in New York, where race did play a prominent role in media reports.
While today and recently thousands of protesters in American cities including Los Angeles have protested the deaths of Brown and Garner, and the failure of grand juries in those cities to indict the officers who shot them, that has not happened in Hollywood.
The Huffington Post did report 20 protesters gathered at the Hollywood intersection where the man was shot to protest his death.
