Around 4 a.m. Monday, a man kidnapped a woman from her home and drove her to the back of Starship Novelties and Gifts, an adult gift store near Jonesboro, Georgia, just south of Atlanta. He then told the woman to call her boyfriend so he (the boyfriend) could listen to her being raped.
Despite being threatened with sexual assault the woman had the presence of mind to call 911 instead of her boyfriend. She pretended the male 911 operator was her boyfriend and told him why she was calling. The dispatcher caught on and in turn pretended to be the woman’s boyfriend. Deonte Smith, a senior dispatcher in Clayton County, was able to get enough information to determine the location of the attack. Smith kept telling the man to stop the attack and he was still on the line when officers arrived.
Robert Giles, 27, was arrested while still in the process of raping the victim. He has been charged with rape, kidnapping, false imprisonment and obstruction.
Smith told WSB TV the call was “the most extreme of my career.” He said he was very upset. “I have a daughter, I have a sister and I have a mom. (It’s) difficult. It really is.”
Smith downplayed what he did, saying he was only doing his job. He credited the victim with her quick thinking and expressed the desire to meet her one day. The dispatcher also said had the call come in a few seconds later, he would have been on break.
According to Major Joe Woodall of the Clayton County police, the 911 tape is not being released to the public. “It’s too horrific.”
