Man climbs 25-foot fence to escape jail

The video shows 23-year-old Joseph Maestas running from inside the gates of the Metropolitan Detention Center in Bernalillo County. The clip shows Maestas being the first to exit the prisoner transport van while acting like his hands were cuffed behind his back.

When it looks like the officer isn’t paying any attention to Maestas, he makes his move. A camera catches Maestas climbing up the razor wire fence, while three security officers remained on the ground. Eventually, Maestas was able to make his way down on the other side of the fence.

Police eventually caught up to the escapee, and he surrendered himself. Police then brought Maestas back to the jail.

The incident occurred earlier in March, and officials said they never expected something like that to happen, but if someone is motivated enough, then they can make it happen.

The charges Maestas was initially brought in on were dismissed. However, the district attorney’s office said the charges will be refiled and three separate felony charges will be filed by prosecutors.
