Man charged with intentionally kills bald eagles with vehicle

The man, Dennis C. Thompson, of Union, Oregon, ended up killing two of the eagles. Authorities cited Thompson on a count of using a motorized vehicle to harass or molest game. The Division of Alaska State Troopers said that Thompson will be arraigned in court on June 30.

The incident occurred on Sunday night in Unalaska. Jamie Sunderland, Unalaska Police Chief, said that somebody called them and reported that someone just ran over an eagle. The caller said there was blood and the eagle was just flopping around and someone should probably put it down.

When officers arrived at the scene, there were two birds dead and a few others were sat nearby and struggling to fly away.

Sunderland said the dead birds were removed from the road, while the ones that had apparent injuries did manage to get away.

Witness statements helped lead troopers, who ended up taking control of the case, to Thompson.

The charge is a misdemeanor. However, it is a federal crime to kill bald eagles. As of now, there is no information that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was notified of the incident.

Sunderland said that he can’t imagine anyone who finds the incident to be acceptable.
