Edmonton - A Lutheran pastor has been arrested, charged with possessing and distributing child pornography after police found hand drawn images of children being sexually assaulted.
Richard John Docekal, 58-years-old, has been a pastor at All Saints Lutheran Church in Edmonton since January 2007. In September of this year, an individual notified Don Schiemann, regional president of the Lutheran Church-Canada, that Docekal possessed pornographic images of children. Schiemann altered members of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT). ALERT's Internet child exploitation unit (ICE) launched a month long investigation into the allegations and reported found dozens of hand drawings that showed children being sexually assaulted. ICE unit Sgt. Mike Lokken told Sun News:
"I have seen some of the images in this case and I can say that it's not just children posed naked, but that it does depict sexual assaults of children. Any time anybody has certain influence or a position within the community, it puts them in a position where they could have contact with young persons, and that's concerning to us."
According to the Edmonton Journal, Docekal was arrested on the initial child pornography charges on October 9th. The investigation is still ongoing however.
Yesterday, ALERT issued a statement saying members of the ICE forensic analysis team are still searching several computer and mobile devices that were seized from Docekal. Docekal could still face additional charges.
Docekal has resigned as pastor of All Saints Lutheran Church. The church released a statement to CTV News saying:
“Rev. Docekal was also implicated in other activities which were of a non-criminal nature but which were of concern regarding his role as a pastor in Lutheran Church–Canada. As his ecclesiastical supervisor, President Schiemann conducted an investigation into these charges and found them warranted. Events culminated in an October 1 meeting, following which Rev. Docekal resigned both as pastor of All Saints Lutheran Church (Edmonton) as well as from the clergy roster of Lutheran Church–Canada.”
Docekal told Global News that the drawings were art, not pornography and he would never harm anyone. He went on to say he is "not a predator" and "not a danger to anyone.”
Docekal has been released from custody on the condition he does not possess any mobile device or computer with Internet access. He is due to appear in court again on Oct. 31st.
