Charlottesville - Law enforcement officials in Virginia are confirming they have the suspect they believe is responsible for abducting a University of Virginia student in custody.
Hannah Graham, an 18-year-old sophomore at the University of Virginia, was last seen during the early morning hours of September 13th. Surveillance video had captured footage of Graham with 32-year-old Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. Matthew at a local mall. Police considered Matthew a person of interest after Graham went missing.
On Friday, Charlottesville Police searched Matthew's apartment and vehicle after receiving information that his vehicle had been seen at the downtown mall where Graham had been seen the night of her disappearance. On Saturday, Matthew went to the police station with his mother and uncle and requested a lawyer, then sped away in his car. An intense manhunt for Matthew began shortly afterwards.
Following the second search of the apartment, a warrant was issued for Matthew's arrest on Tuesday. At the time the warrant was obtained, Charlottesville Police, Chief Tim Longo, told reporters there was ‘sufficient evidence of probable cause to charge Matthew with ‘abduction with intent to defile’.
Graham was located and arrested a short time ago by deputies in Galveston, Texas. He is charged with kidnapping and intent to sexually assault Graham according to the Washington Post.
Matthew has retained James Camblos as his attorney. In a statement issued a short time ago, Camblos said:
"I am Mr. Matthew's attorney. I was hired on Saturday. That's the only thing that I'm going to confirm at this point. The family and I -- nobody is making any statements at this point in time. We might later on, but right now we are not."
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
