Toronto - News broke early today that Jian Ghomeshi would appear in court this afternoon and be charged and that has now happened. Ghomeshi appeared in a Toronto courtroom and was formally charged with four counts of sexual assault and one count of choking.
Ghomeshi arrived at a crowd courtroom in a police car, having been taken into custody either this morning or sometime over the weekend. In the courtroom at College Park he was formally charged and released on $100,000 bail. He must reside with his mother, the court said, and was made to turn over his passport.
His mother is acting as his surety. That role means he must abide by the conditions set by the court and she is the guarantee that he will do so. In the court he sat in the prisoners box and did not look around courtroom. His mother was in the courtroom.
Ghomeshi's lawyer, Marie Henein, requested a publication ban on what was heard in court today and she told media later that Mr. Ghomeshi will be pleading not guilty.
As many as nine women have come forward and made accusations against Ghomeshi, accusing him of attacking them, hitting them and choking them. At least three of them went to police and it is believed these charges are related to the accusations made by those three women.
As reported earlier in Digital Journal, yesterday he dropped his $55 million lawsuit against the CBC and agreed to pay $18,000 for their costs. With regard today's developments, CBC lawyer Chuck Thompson said the broadcaster did not comment on criminal investigations.
His next court appearance will be on Jan. 8th.
