Canadian Jennifer Pan jailed 25 years for matricide

Jennifer Pan found guilty

Pan and her former boyfriend, Daniel Wong, along with Lenford Crawford and David Mylvaganam, were found guilty of both first-degree murder and attempted murder. The prosecution successfully argued that she hired a gang of men to kill her parents because they said she must choose between them and her drug dealing former-boyfriend, Wong, whom she has known since high-school.

Another accused, Eric Carty, will be tried separately because his lawyer came down with a serious illness during the trial.

The November 2010 attack on Pan’s parents in their home left her mother, 53-year-old Bieh Ha Pan, shot dead, and her father, Hann Pan, now 60, with a serious head wound. Pan admits a plot had been concocted but said it was initially only to kill her father, who she said controlled her life. But she claimed she changed the intended victim to herself.

Claims death plot cancelled

During the trial she also insisted she called off the plot entirely and paid the men a $8,500 cancellation fee. Pan was in the home when the parents were attacked and tied up, but not harmed; after the attack she reported it as a home invasion.

Wong and Crawford were not a part of the attack that night but were found guilty of being a part of the plot.

“She’s absolutely in shock,” Pan’s lawyer, Paul Cooper, said after her conviction following the nine-month trial. “For her it’s been exhausting, for everybody involved, it’s been a long, long trial.” He said she’s “devastated” by her conviction.

Pan’s father and brother testified at trial and each remain traumatized over the death of their loved one and over knowing their family member was a part of it. Her father continues to have physical and emotional problems and he can’t go back into the house where the crimes occurred. He says he is unable to sell it because it is now known as a ‘murder’ house.

After the sentencing today Cooper said his client would appeal. He did not say on what grounds.
