article imageJapan's new 'Black Widow' arrested after sixth partner dies

By Kev Hedges     Nov 20, 2014 in Crime
A 67-year-old woman from Japan has been arrested in what the local news media have dubbed the "New Black Widow Case." Chisako Kakehi was held after her sixth ex-partner died in suspicious circumstances.
Interest in the case of Chisako Kakehi has gathered pace since it was reported that the suspicious death of her latest husband was the sixth involving her former partners. Many have been comparing the case to the original "Black Widow Case" in Japan where a 34-year-old Kanae Kijima met several men online and drugged and robbed them before killing them. It was also alleged that she defrauded dozens of men by posing as a housewife or potential marriage partner.
In the case of Chisako Kakehi, she accepts that her previous partners have all died just a few years after she has met them but she denies any wrongdoing. But the latest death is that of her 75-year-old husband Isao Kakehi, whom wedded Chisako only in October 2013 but was found to have lethal amounts of cyanide in his blood according to a recent autopsy. Isao died in December last year with the marriage lasting barely over a month.
Kakehi could face the death penalty if convicted. The latest Black Widow case has gripped the Japanese public possibly because of the millionaire status of the accused and the suspicion there could even be more than the six partners that met their fate in suspicious circumstances, often just months after forming a relationship with the femme fatale.
The Japanese socialite has been dubbed the "Black Widow" after the spider of the same name, which mates with a male spider before killing and devouring it.
