Hospital worker charged in sexual assault on patients

William Butler, 33 of Pittsburgh, who was employed as a “patient sitter” at the hospital, faces four counts of aggravated indecent assault and five counts of indecent assault, all felonies.
According to reporting from CBS affiliate –KDKA, Butler said he was fired from the hospital after an investigation was started into the alleged assaults. He also said that police questioned him and two other people however, as of Saturday Butler is the only person that has been charged in the alleged assaults.

Butler denied the charges saying “I’m innocent, I didn’t do anything wrong,” in the short interview at his home.

Police allege in the complaint that Butler went into the victims’ rooms “using the excuse of preforming medical procedures and inappropriately touched the victims. Butler would tell the victims he needed to check the ‘leads’ of their heart monitor. He would also tell the victims he needed to check if they were ‘clean’ or ‘wet’ (soiled).”

When asked whether or not he touched any of the patients’ private areas he responded “not inappropriately,“ according to the KDKA report. However, the complaint says that the charges are based on eyewitness accounts and Butler’s own admissions.

The complaint also alleges that Butler admitted to some of the incidents, but did not provide details as to which ones.

During a few of the incidents Butler is alleged to have fondled several of the victims’ breasts, while telling them he was checking to make sure their heart monitor leads were properly attached. On several other occasions, Butler is said to have touched other private areas of several women without their consent.

One of the victims identified as Jane Doe 5 told Butler on July 3 to “leave me alone, get away” and Butler “left the room without saying anything.” Two days later recognizing Butler from her previous encounter with him, she told Butler as he entered her room, “I don’t know you.” Butler then walked out of the room saying “that’s good.”

On one occasion after Butler inappropriately touched a victim’s breasts, “A few hours later, Butler came in her room, took her covers off, pulled the gown up and began to ‘massage’ [a private area],” police allege in the complaint.

KDKA said Butler admitted he had only worked at the hospital for a few months before being fired, but has also worked at other area facilities, including VA hospital.

UPMC Mercy issued a statement saying they are troubled by the accusations, are committed to protecting the health and safety of its patients and are cooperating fully with law enforcement.

Butler is currently free on a $10,000 bond and awaits a August 13 preliminary hearing. Butler’s only previous arrest in Pennsylvania was on March 26, 2006 where he pleaded guilty to drunk driving, after a police officer observed him driving abruptly.
