article imageGunman executes two NYPD officers then commits suicide

By Karen Graham     Dec 20, 2014 in Crime
New York City - It was nothing less than an execution when an armed gunman walked up to a police car and opened fire Saturday afternoon, killing the two officers inside. He then ran into a subway station and turning the gun on himself, shooting himself in the head.
The shooting incident took place in the predominately African-American neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, according to the Associated Press. The suspect fled into a nearby subway and apparently shot himself in the head.
The two officers were rushed to Woodhull Hospital where one officer was pronounced dead. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a city official and a police department official with direct knowledge of the incident told the AP that the second officer was later pronounced dead at the hospital. One officer was a seven-year veteran of the NYPD and the other officer had been with the force two years.
About a block from the shooting site, police officers stood in the street that was blocked off with crime scene tape. Pedestrians were not even allowed on the sidewalks. A resident of the neighborhood, Derrick Thompson, said the shooting took place across from the Tompkins Houses public housing development.
CNN television news is saying at this time the suspect was supposedly from Baltimore and had allegedly come to new York City with the express purpose of executing a police officer. Authorities are going through the suspect's social media accounts to see if there is any further information to be gleaned from his posts.
Mayor Bill DeBlasio was supposed to hold a news conference at 7 p.m. but that has been delayed as police officials continue to gather information. The shootings came at a very tense time in the city, and is going to have an impact all across the country as the nation has been reeling from several killings of African-Americans by police officers.
