Lake Mary - George Zimmerman, who gained worldwide notoriety after shooting and killing unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012, has been wounded during a road rage shooting incident in central Florida.
WFTV reports Zimmerman, 31, was initially believed to have been shot in the face during the incident, which occurred Monday morning on Lake Mary Boulevard in Lake Mary, Seminole County. But sources told WFTV that Zimmerman's injuries may have been caused by broken glass. Authorities said the injuries appear to be minor.
The Orlando Sentinel reports Zimmerman was released from Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, where he was treated for facial wounds.
"I don't believe he had a direct hit with a bullet," Don West, Zimmerman's attorney, told the Sentinel.
Witness George Paschek told WFTV he was working his his backyard when he "heard shots."
"I didn't hear no crashes, cars hitting each other or anything like that," said Paschek.
Lake Mary Police Chief Steve Bracknell said Zimmerman did not shoot, but that another person, who has been described as having a history of run-ins with Zimmerman, fired at him. News footage showed what appeared to be a bullet hole in the passenger side window of Zimmerman's Honda Ridgeline SUV. Bracknell said the suspect is cooperating with police.
Zimmerman made worldwide headlines after he shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February 2012 while working as a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain in a gated community in Sanford. Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder, but was acquitted by a Seminole County jury in July 2013.
Since his trial, Zimmerman has had numerous encounters with police. He has been arrested twice after being accused of domestic violence by separate girlfriends and, most recently, he was arrested by Lake Mary police in January and accused of aggravated assault.
This isn't the first time Zimmerman has been involved in a road rage incident; he was arrested for allegedly threatening to kill another driver during a September 2014 encounter.
