Sanford - It is alleged the substitute teacher was so drunk in her Grade 2 class, she did not know what day of the week it was and could not stand up. She faces three criminal charges.
Holly Joel, 52, was employed as a substitute teacher with the Seminole County Public Schools. On Tuesday, she was assigned to teach a Grade 2 class at Bentley Elementary school in Sandford, Florida. A school secretary and another staff member became suspicious that she was either drunk or ill.
The Orlando Sentinel reports when the school principal asked her to stand up, she stumbled and fell. She did not know what day of the week it was. When Joel was asked who the president was she answered "Obama," but when asked what Obama's first name was she said "Obama."
When police arrived, an officer observed Joel slurred her speech and had alcohol on her breath. A water bottle with a pink liquid was found in the room that smelled like alcohol and pills were also found in her purse. Joel was taken to a hospital and then booked into the John E Polk Correctional Facility.
Joel is facing charges of child neglect, disorderly conduct, and interfering with school administration functions.
Under Florida law, interfering with the administration of a school is a second-degree misdemeanor.
Martha Garcia, principal of Bentley Elementary School, sent a letter [PDF] to parents advising them of what happened and telling them the children were quickly removed from the classroom and were never in any danger or left unsupervised.
Joel appeared before a judge yesterday and was released on bond. WFTV reports Joel pleaded no contest to a DUI charge in 2012 after she refused to take a breathalyzer test. She was placed on probation.
Joel is not the only American teacher recently to face consequences for being drunk in a classroom. On Feb. 19, a kindergarten student went to the office of Larchment Elementary and said there was something wrong with his teacher. A cup smelling like alcohol was found in Klara Bowman's classroom and Bowman walked into a wall while being escorted out of the room. The teacher was put on administrative leave before she was fired last week.
Joel, who did not have a teaching certificate, has been fired from the Seminole County Public Schools system.
