article imageFBI agent cleared after killing man connected to Boston bombers

By Marcus Hondro     Mar 22, 2014 in Crime
Media reports say the FBI agent who killed a man while interrogating him on the Boston bombings has been cleared of any wrongdoing. The New York Times said that sources say he was cleared "by a prosecutor in Florida and by an F.B.I. internal review."
The deceased man, Ibragim Todashev, from Chechnya, was shot and killed by the agent last May in Florida during an interrogation. The FBI has given conflicting reports of how he died but in all they say the man rushed at the agent and the agent, fearing for his safety, fired several shots. Initially Todashev was said to have had a knife but later the FBI said he didn't have a weapon. At one time the FBI said that when the agent was rushed, Todashev, who'd been arrested twice previously for violent offences and was facing a charge of aggravated assault, was brandishing a "pole."

Media has not revealed their sources for the information which states that the agent has been cleared of wrongdoing; the Times story cited "law enforcement officials" as their sources but did not provide names. The Florida prosecutor investigating the case has denied the veracity of reports in the media.
“The release of purported information is inaccurate and unfair to Mr. Todashev's surviving family and the police officers involved in the incident and their families,” prosecutor Jeffrey L. Ashton said in a written statement Friday. “It also contravenes and frustrates all of the efforts to date by employees of the F.B.I., D.O.J. and this office for the orderly and safe release of information."
Justice Dept. to clear FBI
The FBI has also said that before his death Todashev, who moved to Florida from Boston, told agents he was involved in a triple-homicide in Waltham, Mass. in 2011 with bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, but that he was not involved in the Boston Marathon bombings. The bombings appeared to have been carried out by Tamerlan and his brother, Dzhokhar. Tamerlan was killed during a shootout days after the bombings while Dzhokhar was wounded, captured and now awaits trial.
Three people were killed in the April 15, 2013 bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, while another 264 were wounded. During their investigation of the bombings, the FBI said that they found a connection to the bombing suspects and Todashev. Two agents were sent down to Florida from the Boston field office to interrogate him.
Reports say that another review of Todashev's death, this one by the Justice Department, is also near completion. The Times wrote that this review will also find the agent followed proper procedures in the shooting.
