By Owen Weldon     Mar 24, 2014 in Crime
On Friday a farmer in Norway was sentenced to a year in prison for leaving 400+ pigs to die of thirst, as well as hunger.
According to The Local, T√łnsberg court in southern Norway said that in the eyes of the court, the accused farmer knew the condition of the pigs, but chose to do anything to prevent a tragedy.
On top of being sentenced to a year in prison, the farmer has also been banned from keeping animals for the next 20 years, NY Daily reports.
According to GlobalPost, food and safety authorities investigated the report of neglect back in February 2013, and that is when they found out that the pigs had died.
The farmer said that he was having problems managing the farm, and he was under a lot of pressure because of an illness in his family.
The farmer also said that he knew about the pigs' conditions and he didn't want to go into the pigpen because he didn't want to see what had happened to them.
The farmer's lawyer was seeking out a an acquittal or a mild sentence.
