Woman who faked having cancer sentenced for defrauding donors

Watson, who defrauded strangers as well as friends out of thousands of dollars, was able to avoid an immediate jail term, according to The Guardian.

Watson, who is a mother of two, made local headlines after she announced she had cervical cancer, which was in the late stages. She ended up receiving donations, deals for her wedding, as well as free gifts.

On Friday, the court heard about how Watson gave regular updates on her condition and treatment, in an effort to keep the deceit going.

However, Watson did have minor surgery for a gynecological condition, which was treatable, but she never was diagnosed nor treated for cancer.

She ended up receiving a 12-month suspended jail sentence, and she was also ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid community work.

Recorder Gerard Pounder, who sentenced her, said that Watson showed lack of maturity in the way she conducted her life.

Pounder also said that it was a great testament to the many people who showed supreme generosity towards her because they thought she only have a short time left to live.

Pounder didn’t order Watson to pay prosecution costs so she can pay her victims back.
