article imageFacePalm Friday: Burglar uses phone to book taxi for getaway

By Owen Weldon     Jan 15, 2016 in Crime
Birmingham - A woman from England used her mobile phone to book a taxicab after she took thousands of dollars from her employer's safe.
This is my weekly column FacePalm Friday, where I take a look at offbeat news. You can go and read last week's column here.
Krystal Kerr, a former employee at a children's center in Birmingham, wore a burka to disguise herself when she stole more than $20,000 from a safe. She entered her place of employment and walked right by her colleagues and made her way to the safe.
After she took the money, she fled in a taxi and was dropped off Erdington, and then she took a bus back home.
Since Kerr used her phone to book the getaway vehicle, police easily tracked her down. When officers found her, they also found most of the money she had took. Kerr was also identified on CCTV, and she said she stole the cash because she wanted to flee an abusive boyfriend.
Before she was caught, Kerr headed to a local park and burnt both the burka and the bag that contained the money.
The 28-year-old was going to use the money to book a vacation in Jamaica. Instead of booking a vacation, she was sentenced to 12 months in jail for the incident, which occurred in July of last year. She was sentenced after she previously admitted to theft.
Paul Reid, the prosecutor in the case said Kerr pre-planned everything and it was a well executed burglary. He also said she had breached her employer's trust.
